Violent protests have erupted several times in the past week in east Jerusalem, where residents are angry over both the new Jewish housing plans and unsubstantiated rumors that Jewish extremists are plotting to take over an Old City shrine, holy to both Muslims and Jews. The city was largely calm Saturday, although in a minor incident Palestinian youths lobbed some rocks at Israeli troops, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullet fire. The letter released Saturday directly addressed only Ireland but the Vatican said it could be read as applying to other countries. Hundreds of new abuse allegations recently came to light across Europe, including in the pope's native Germany. (AP Photo/Peter Morrison)AP - Pope Benedict XVI's unprecedented letter to Ireland apologizing for chronic child abuse within the Catholic Church failed Saturday to calm the anger of many victims, who accused the Vatican of ducking its own responsibility in promoting a worldwide culture of cover-up.

Chief Executive Willie Walsh issued a direct apology via YouTube for the walkout, the airline's first in almost 15 years, saying it was a 'terrible day for BA.' The strike — backed by some unions in the United States, Germany and Spain — also risked harm to Britain's Labour government before a tough general election expected before June.
